In a wake of the American ambassador’s remark on the corruption of public service by government up to 500 million per year during the Clean-Hand Concert on May 30 at Olympic Stadium, organized by NGOs, a troop of comedian, led by well-know comedian Chuong Chy, aka Kuy, performed on local channels television was mocking NGOs that are critical of the government.
After the sketch was aired on CTN channel, and then it was still continuing to be aired on other channels, mainly TV5 and Bayon TV, by accusing some NGOs of censuring the government in order to secure international donor funds.
In response to the US ambassador Carol Rodley’s comment, senior government official from Anti-corruption Unit held press conference by accusing the ambassador of using inaccurate information.
One of characters said that opening the NGOs means hug money. And it was form to insult corrupt government, corruption, corruption… change, change the old with the new.
Chuong Chy, called Kuy, was quoted by the Cambodia Daily as saying that “saying that officials are corrupt, I don’t know. I just see them building schools, wells and bridges,” he added that “there is no corruption. They take money to build things; they didn’t take it to put in their own pocket.”
