Star sued for contract breach
CAMBODIAN pop singer Meas Soksophea has been sued for over US$50,000 by a German-based NGO for allegedly breaching a contract by refusing to sing at a benefit concert.Kry Sok Y, deputy prosecutor at Phnom Penh Municipal Court, said Meas Soksophea – best known for the hits I am sorry and 1,000 nights – appeared for questioning on Monday of last week in connection with a complaint lodged by Doung Channimol, president of the Support Association for the Ethical Education of Children in Cambodia.
Doung Channimol submitted a complaint to the court in September of last year accusing Meas Soksophea of failing to sing at a fundraiser in Germany, and demanding €36,960 (US$51,389) in compensation.
Meas Soksophea could not be reached for comment, but her brother Meas Sokrattanak denied the accusations.
He said Meas Soksophea had been contracted to sing at four events in Europe and was supposed to be paid after each appearance.
After completing three of the events without receiving payment, she called it quits, he said.
“I asked her to return back to Cambodia though the programme was not fully complete yet because I do not want my sister to suffer further deception when she got nothing for her previous performances,” he said.

This house is her current shop of wedding embellishment and hair dressing salon, where her family is living her for several years.Aok Sokunkanha’s mother told Angkor Thom Magazine on phone that she really wants to sell her house because she wants to move to new location. She added that previously, here was flooded but now it is no problem with flooding. Popular Lyrics, Sok Chomnor, who is Sokun Nisa’s boyfriend, told The Phnompenhdaily Online News that “Sokun Nisa is ready to shoot advertising spots for a big private company’s products at the end of this year. In 2011, she is scheduled to stare movie as well”.
In order to retrieve her popularity and reputation, she is trying to change new style of singing and dancing and she also has tried to promote herself via her website, which was redesigned.
In 2010, she shot a lot of advertisement spots for private companies which enable her to make more money. In addition, Sokun Nisa rejected to perform in USA. Sok Chomnor confirmed that “the reason that Nisa did not accept overseas performing is that she is busy at the end of this year. On the other hand, she wants to work domestically rather than abroad. Former singer and karaoke actress, Nab Pisey, 25, now is selling teen fashion dresses at Depot Market after quitting her singing and performing career for two years. She used to sing at beer gardens at night. And she has been also invited to sing concert over the weekend.
Nab Pisey told Khmer-language newspaper- Kohsantepheap daily- that previously she used to perform karaoke for both domestic and overseas productions, especially for Reaksmey Hang Meas production until she gained popularity.
Even though, since at the end of 2008, she was not seen in performing arts and it was rumored that she would get married to overseas man living in USA.
A 25-year-singer said that leaving the singing career did not mean that she got married to Cambodian-American man. It is because that she is busy to run her own business.
She has bought modern clothes from overseas for wholesaling to her retailers in Phnom Penh and for her stall too.

Nguon Sreysor used to record CDs for Reaksmei Neak Meas production for more than 2 years, and then this production went bankrupt. And later, we did not see her recording for other productions and she rarely appeared at the weekend concert.
At the present, she is studying in the year two at the National University of Management. And she is being happy with her study result. She told the Post that her father stopped her from signing because her study was very weak. Therefore, she needs times to concentrate on her study.
At the mean times, it is reported that she just changed new luxury car and she has a cosmetic stall at Olympic market as well.

Meas Soksophea has been my favourite female Khmer singer for a while now, in fact since I heard her rendition of the love song What You Don’t Know, which you can hear and see for yourself in the video. She also sang the theme song from the film The Red Sense, which is a beautiful song.
Recently married, therefore disappointing all of her male fans in Cambodia, Sophea has been increasing her online presence in the past few months, embracing facebook and twitter with regular updates via the latter.
Chancing my arm, I sent her a message and a few questions, which she graciously responded to within 24 hours this weekend and which I repeat below. In what other country would a nation’s favourite singing sweetheart reply to an email, let alone within 24 hours? My sincere thanks to Sophea.
Q. When did you record What You Don’t Know?A. My record company asked me to record it in April 2008. I sang in both English and Khmer because the Cambodian audience like mixed songs now, and other nationalities like Korean, Chinese and Indians are also doing mixed language songs. The video was shot locally in a ‘green’ room with 3D animation effects.
Q. Tell me about the theme song for the film, Red Sense.
A. I recorded [Svaeng Rouk Pop Tmei; aka Walk to Freedom] about 3 years ago with Phoeurk Chantha. It’s a very beautiful song, but you know, I don’t even have the audio anymore and I haven’t even seen the film. [Note - the film score for The Red Sense was composed by Robert John Sedky and the film itself has been shown twice in Cambodia.]
Q. Can you tell me more about the recording process?
A. For many songs I just go into the studio and get it done. I don’t always know exactly what film or project it’s for. My job is to sing the song as well as I can though usually its for a good cause or project. I trust my studio team, a famous musical teacher here is in charge and I trust him too, he’s a good person and has been in the music industry all his life. I know that if he’s behind it, it will be for a great film or a good cause like to stop disease, or help with Aids or teach children to wash their hands, for example.
Q. What are your personal favourites?
A. I have many favourite songs, even many overseas songs that I’ve sung, it’s so hard to pick. There are so many great song writers too. The most successful of my songs would have to be 1,000 nights and more recently, I Am Sorry, because I have never given my all in acting as much as I did in that video and in part 2 as well. Part 3 is soon to be released. This song was very successful and got many great reviews, which I was so pleased about.

Cambodian censors axe ‘love for auction’ TV series

The Ministry of Information ordered the Cambodian Television Network (CTN) to stop showing the popular film series “Strange Lovers” because it was “totally opposite to good Cambodian tradition.”
It “seriously affects the reputation and dignity of Cambodian women as well as drawing a lot of reaction from the audience,” a statement from the ministry read.
The story revolves around a young, wealthy woman called Nuon Neang Lom-orng, who has all the qualities of the ideal modern wife: she is smart, comes from a good family, has studied abroad and knows all about art and music.
She is inundated with marriage proposals until her mother, after agonising over who should be allowed to wed her daughter, decides to auction her off at a starting price of one million dollars.
The story of “Serial Lovers” was to be told over 60 episodes, but the government intervention means viewers are left hanging after just 13 episodes.
The show’s writer Poan Phuong Bopha said she regretted the decision, describing the ban as a threat to the movie makers. “This feels like we are being beaten with a stick,” she said.
It is not the first time Cambodia has outlawed entertainment it considers harmful to the country’s traditional values.
In 2004, the government banned a pop song that showed scenes of a Buddhist monk hugging and kissing a girl while bathing in a pond near a pagoda.
Last year, the country?s first rock opera ‘Where Elephants Weep’ was axed after monks said it was insulting to see actors dressed as clergy breaking into song and dance.

Dahn Monika’s mother, Men Channary, told The Angkor Thom Magazine that “Monika is very happy when she knew that she will have a baby girl because it is her desire and her husband’s.” She also added that her daughter is keeping taking care of her health and her husband’s relative is taking care of her as well. And Monika is ready to conceive.
Monika’s mother also said that Monika’s weight increased 4kg. And it is expected that she will still gain weight because her baby is growing from day to day.
Monika had started entering into the performing arts since 1980s when she was 13 years old. Monika’s mother was a former Khmer traditional artist. So, Monika follows her mother’s footstep.
Ms. Channary told magazine that she plans to visit her daughter before conceiving at the end of this year in order to help take care of her daughter and she will stay in Australia for 6 months until her daughter has enough good health and energy. She also said that Monika, her daughter and husband will be able to return to Cambodia at the mid-2011.
